Junior varsity football goes undefeated

In their final game of the of the season on Thursday, Oct. 8, the junior varsity football team defeated Robinson High School 21-6 giving them a 4-0 record on the season. 

“My favorite part of the season was the Robinson game,” sophomore wide receiver Jack Turtle said. “It was the most fun game because it was the closest game we had.”

The team would normally play an eight-game schedule but due to Covid-19 they only played four games. Their opponents included Gaither, Alonso, Riverview, and Robinson.   

“It was definitely fun being able to get out there since we did come into it not knowing if we were going to be able to play even four games,” sophomore tight end John Wulbern said. “The best part was just being out there with all your teammates and winning games.”

Through the first three games the team’s defense did not give up any points defeating opponents by a combined 98-0. Their only points allowed on the season were the six points given up in the Robinson game.  

“I am most proud of our defense, it has grown a lot and done really well throughout the season,” Wulbern said.

Matching the stout performance of the defense, the offense averaged almost 30 points per game. Their highest scoring game was Thursday, Sept. 24 when they beat Alonso 48-0.  

“The chemistry of the team was really good,” sophomore safety Nathan Salzman said. “Everyone came together as a brotherhood and that was a big thing.” 

With the Junior Varsity season coming to an end and the varsity team lacking a sufficient number of players due to quarantine, many junior varsity players will be called up to play versus Palm Harbor University Friday, Oct. 16.  

“We didn’t do as good last year, but we bounced back this year,” Salzman said. “We had a lot of people that thought we weren’t good and we showed them that we are. It’s going to be good the next few years on varsity.”
