On August 19th, Plant Varsity Football had a preseason game against Wharton High School to kick off this year’s football season.
Quarter one started out with a Plant fumble which Wharton recovered. This resulted in a touchdown and extra point, putting the score at 7-0, Wharton. This score remained the same all of Quarter one.
“Football is a lot of work but in the end it’s worth it to see everyone come together for the team” sophomore Brand Farrior said.
Quarter two starts out with a touchdown for Wharton with 10:38 left in the quarter. At 4:49, Wharton’s quarterback fumbles but recovers the ball. Half a minute later, Plant sacks Wharton’s quarterback. The first half ended with Wharton in the lead, 14-0.
After halftime, the game resumed. In quarter three Plant stopped Wharton and forced them to punt on fourth down. The quarter ended with a fair catch at the 47-yard line for Plant, with no points scored for either team during the quarter.
In the final quarter, both teams punted back and forth. With under two minutes remaining, Wharton intercepted a ball thrown by one of Plant’s quarterbacks. However, Wharton punted with less than a minute left. In the final seven seconds, Plant scored a touchdown and an extra point. The final score was 14-7, Wharton.
“My highlight was the touchdown because we couldn’t get going the whole game,” Senior Jaquez Kindell said. “When we got on the board, the team got riled up. We should have played better and brought more to the game. We just did not bring enough.”
