Students earn nominations for art award

Plant High School art and photography students earned 20 awards in the 2015 National Scholastic Arts competition. Student’s work will be displayed in the National Scholastic Art Show and an awards ceremony will take place Thurs. Feb. 12 from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Blake High School’s Performing Arts Magnet Theatre.

Awards are divided into four categories, in which Plant students all qualified in. There were nine Honorable Mentions and four Silver Key Awards. Among the Honorable Mentions was sophomore Caroline Norton.

“The National Scholastic Arts competition was a really great platform to get some of my work out there and see what people think about it, ” Norton said.

The Gold Key Award, the top honor, went to three students, Micah Lomel, Marisa Stratton and Savannah Walker. Senior Savannah Walker submitted five pieces, two of which got Honorable Mentions, one got a Silver Key Award, one a Gold Key Award and another an American Visions and Voices award.

“All of the pieces I submitted I have done in Mrs. Geopper’s class. It was surprising I got that much recognition because I didn’t really think I would win anything, but it’s really cool to participate in a national competition,” Walker said. “It’s a huge encouragement to have a positive response like that, and it makes me want to continue to work on and enjoy my art. It was especially rewarding to see how well all my classmates did.”
