Sophomore spikes into fall season
The girls’ volleyball team is exhibiting their knowledge of the game along with an extensive practice payoff beginning their season only two months ago.
Watching from the bleachers can be quite a show, but who knows the game better than a team member herself: Jasmine Ward. Sophomore Jasmine Ward describes the most exciting aspect of the game as “being able to get out there and do what I love with my friends.”
As a student-athlete steps must be taken to balance both school life and sports on a day to day basis. From practicing for hours after school and stretching out at home, to game day glory, athletic involvement inevitably impedes in one’s personal agenda. Making time to complete homework and enjoy free time with friends can quickly become a challenge in the absence of planning. “I just focus on my time wisely. I am very organized and write everything that goes on. I try to manage my time as well as I can,” Ward says.
High school sports involvement often leads to a higher level of performance; in some cases, even advancement into the collegiate level. Performing on the collegiate level can create a pathway to several future opportunities in and outside of the school environment. In regards to sticking with the game in the future, Jasmine remarks, “Volleyball is a lot, but I do think I will continue until high school is over.”
For those who are interested in trying out for the team, Jasmine advises that they “just go for it! It’s not just playing volleyball; you learn so many other things. For example, bonding with girls and how to be the best supporters and encouragers for your friends.” Take it from Jasmine, and keep an eye out for her at the next girls volleyball game.
