The End of Brees?
On Sunday, Jan. 17, the New Orleans Saints’ season ended in a loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Saints walked off the field in realization that their season is over, but one Saint took a second to look up at the empty stands and gave, what many fans believe, was his last farewell; his name is Drew Brees.
“Listen, I always soak in the moment,” Brees said to a reporter for the Saints in a post-game interview. “And I’m looking up at my family and blowing kisses to my wife and daughter and fist bumping my boys. Yeah, I mean, they’ve become so much a part of this as my kids have gotten older, and they’re so invested in this as well. And so, it makes the moment special to be able to share it all together.”
As quarter back and leader of the Saints since 2006, Brees holds the NFL records for career pass completions, career completion percentage and career passing yards. He was also elected as the Offensive player of the year in 2008 and 2011, and even led his team to victory in Super Bowl XLIV, where he was the MVP. It is safe to say that Brees’s had an accomplished career filled with a multitude of achievements. Although Brees has achieved much in the NFL, he has his fair share of rough patches, and with numerous injuries and much doubt, Brees has never let the rough patches in his career ruin his determination.
“A good friend of mine once told me that each morning when you wake up, think about winning the day,” Brees said. “Don’t worry about a week from now or a month from now- just think about one day at a time. If you are worried about the mountain in the distance, you might trip over the molehill right in front of you. Win the day.”
Is Drew Brees finally done fighting? He has accomplished a variety of records and led a dominant team through many seasons. Although, stars don’t typically ponder on their past, but rather they speculate their future. So, what does future of Brees have in store for him?
“I’m going to give myself an opportunity to think about the season, think about a lot of things, just like I did last year, and make a decision,” Brees said.
Whether Brees retires, or plays on to contend another season, Brees is proud of what he has worked for and all he has accomplished; he is thankful for all he has learned and all the memories he created playing football, and many fans across the nation are thankful for all Brees has done for them and the rest of the football community.
“I would never regret it. Never. No complaints, no regrets,” Brees said. “Man, I’ve always tried to play this game with a great respect, and a great reverence for it. I appreciate all that this game has given to me. There are obviously so many incredible memories, so many incredible relationships that have come as a result of playing this game.”
