‘Gone Girl’ gives mixed emotions

New mystery film, Gone Girl truly enraptured its audience. Directed by David Fincher, the movie is an adaption of the book by Gillian Flynn. Full of violence, drama, and blood this movie is not for someone with a weak stomach. The plot revolves around the marriage troubles of Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) and Amy (Rosamund Pike). It starts off as a picturesque marriage- they are truly a couple made for each other.

As with many other couples from the more recent generations, their marriage begins disintegrating as infidelity and economic troubles begin dominating and overpowering Amy and Nick’s “love” for each other.

The mystery begins when Nick comes home to find Amy gone– with all evidence indicating her supposed death. Nick is instantly blamed for her death; he becomes hated in his town and becomes the prime suspect of the crime. The shock comes when Amy is revealed to be alive. After careful planning, she set Nick up to look like her murderer.

The film keeps its audience on edge, introducing continuous plot twist.  With an ambiguous end, many viewers leave the movie unpleased. However inconclusive it seems there is not sequel. Fincher argues that it was the only ending that made sense, the only ending that kept the characters true to themselves. Whether this is unsatisfactory, the first 140 minutes of the film are worthwhile.
