Plant Swim Starts Season with Time Trials
On August 22, the Plant Swim Team completed their time trials. This is for swimmers to determine their spot on the team.
Swimmers participating in the trials had to swim a 100-yard freestyle swim, or 4 laps, and a 100-stroke choice, any stroke but freestyle.
“I liked that I got a PR,” said senior Jack Bricklemeyer. “It was great to get the team back together for a real race”.
Former coach, Gil Gonzalez, who had previously coached for 30 years, also made an appearance. The new head coach, Katherine Roy, who teaches freshman biology at Plant, was previously assistant coach for last season’s team. The new assistant coach, Valerie Houston, who has taught AVID at Plant for seven years, is new to coaching and swim.
“I thought the kids worked super hard and tried their best” Houston said. “I am super excited for the season.”
The meet was a way for returning swimmers to meet the new editions to the team. New swimmers are assigned senior buddies to help the team get to know each other.
“It was a fun way to get back into the season and I love being with my teammates in such a supportive team,” said junior Libby Maddux.
