The 70 Year Reign of Queen Elizabeth II is Concluded
After King George VI passed away in 1952, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor took over the throne. She went on to have the longest recorded reign of any monarch in world history, other than Louis XIV.
That 70-year reign ended on September 8, when Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, during her summer retreat at her country estate. Her oldest son, Charles, immediately became king. King Charles III will be formally crowned in the coming months.
In the meantime, Britain has begun a 10-day mourning period that only a tiny share of living people can recall having witnessed after the death of King George IV. This scripted period will go until the official date of the Queens’ funeral.
The cause of Queens’ death has not been specified.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” The Palace said.
Queen Elizabeth mastered the crown’s weight- she did not show emotions in public, took decisions upon her role while reserving her personal wishes, and adhered to the rules imposed. Furthermore, with time she became an analog celebrity in a digital age- with plenty of trending Tik Toks, memes, and even embraced Instagram, she became an iconic public figure.
She was known as the most prolific couture client in the world and was said to have accumulated thousands of dresses in the storerooms of Buckingham Palace. And while she never was a fan of fashion, the Queen understood that her appearance was a crucial part of her role as the head of the Royal Family.
In all, aside from being the face of England, Queen Elizabeth II was a governmental, idealistic, and public figure that grew popular in different areas of social media.
“Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived, a promise with destiny kept, and she is mourned most deeply in her passing. That promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today,” King Charles III said.
Queen Elizabeth served her country, and now the monarchy cycle continues.
