As hurricane Ian approaches Florida, it is important to prepare for the possibility of a storm hitting your area. Scroll to learn more about school closures and how to get ready for the storm.

As Hurricane Ian is intensifying, Floridians are beginning to prepare for the arrival of the storm. Late Sunday afternoon, Hillsborough County Public School parents were notified by the school district that classes would be canceled starting Monday, Sep. 26, through Thursday, Sep 29. As the public school campuses are often used as shelters during severe storms, the school board had no choice but to cancel school for most of the week. Also, the school closures are meant to give people in the area time to evacuate from their homes if needed.

Now is the time to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Tropical Storm and Hurricane preparation can be challenging, but there are a few items that each household should have to stay as safe as possible during this time.

Below is a hurricane preparation checklist of everything you need before a storm affects your area. Before Ian makes landfall, plan so you and your family can stay as safe as possible.

  • water bottles and jugs
  • flashlights and batteries
  • phone chargers
  • medications
  • any important documents
  • first aid kits
  • nonperishable food items
  • gasoline for vehicles
  • pet supplies
  • cash
  • hygienic supplies

Hope everyone stays safe.
