Lunar project asks for donations
Since the first successful moon landings, people have been intrigued by the unanswered questions surrounding the moon. In recent news, scientist from the United Kingdom have released a new project, Lunar Mission One, with the aim of landing a robotic probe on the moon within ten years, according to BBC News.
Due to the difficulty of government funding for space projects, this project took a different approach. The public has been asked to contribute to funding this moon mission. In addition to donating money to kickstart the project, people are allowed to put photos, letters, and possibly DNA included in a time capsule that is to be sent up along with the probe.
The material sent up in the time capsule is advertised to last as long as one billion years. By donating a couple hundred pounds, these people could be recognized for being part of the first human history on the moon.
Lunar Mission One plans on collecting data by drilling a sample from underneath the moon’s surface. This feat will be accomplished in the hopes of finding evidence that the moon could sustain human life in a nearby future. By providing the possibility of human involvement, people’s interest and contributions to lunar research will hopefully be peaked.
