On Saturday, March 2, from 3 to 10 p.m., Plant High’s Anchor service club attended the annual Relay for Life event at Raymond James Stadium. Seven girls volunteered their time to raise money for cancer. The Nonprofit Organization united the Tampa community under a united front for the entire night.
Anchor Club had a booth where they sold a variety of snacks like Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Nutter Butters, and Ritz Bites. The club’s proceeds from the event went directly to the Relay for Life organization.
The annual event is open to the public each year, and attendees can wander the track and pay to play games, pet baby goats, or even throw a pie in another person’s face. All booths are run entirely by volunteers to ensure that the Nonprofit receives as much funding as possible.
Junior Maria Palios is a board member of Anchor Club and, specifically, an event coordinator. She was asked about her favorite part of volunteering at Relay for Life. “My favorite part about volunteering at Relay for Life is that it was for such a good cause. Raising money for cancer research means the world to me, and I hope everyone’s donations made an impact.”
Palios was also asked whether she would volunteer for Relay for Life again in the future. “I would volunteer for Relay for Life again. It was really fun to go with Anchor and hang out at Raymond James. There were lots of cool things to do there, and I had a great time.”
Anchor was one of many clubs to participate in the fundraiser this year. Beta Honor Society, Orchestra, and the Plant Danceros were among some other Plant groups to join in on the event, and most participants at the school will continue to attend Relay for Life in the coming years.
