“Twisters” hit theatres exclusively on July 19, making a big splash with its star-studded leads, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell.
Knowing it was a sequel to “Twister” from 1996, and hesitant because of the recent lackluster remakes and sequels that have been coming out, I was not sure if I would enjoy it. I loved the actors in other roles I have seen, so while my expectations were not high, I was still rooting for it.
The movie follows Kate, a former storm chaser played by Edgar-Jones, whose life changes after a tragic incident while tracking a tornado in Oklahoma. Some time later, when an old face from her past comes back to tempt her into storm chasing again, she must face old and new challenges which come her way. One of these challenges is competing with Tyler Owens, played by Powell, to get to a twister first.
Anyone who loves action adventures and thrillers would like this movie, since there is no shortage of danger and anticipation. Additionally, the weather effects bring compelling and realistic visuals to the screen, adding an extra layer of excitement to further immerse the viewer in storm-enthralled Oklahoma.Building atop the special effects, the soundtrack was great atcreating an emotional depth for the film, in connecting how the characters felt in certain situations to the audience’s own emotions.
In addition to the soundtrack and special effects, the characters were captivating to watch, as well. I liked how the viewer could see the nuances from how Kate used to be before the incident to how it affected her after. I also loved the great chemistry between the actors, so when their characters interacted, whether positively or negatively, it was intriguing and electrifying to see.
With a post-credit scene, the movie’s run time was just over two hours. Throughout that time, the storyline built itself into asomewhat satisfying conclusion. Certain aspects of the ending were confusing to me, with loose ends left hanging. I assume this is because the director wants the viewer to produce their own conclusion. Overall, I felt like “Twisters” was a good summer blockbuster that successfully balanced action and depthwithout ruining the adventurous spirit of the film. It was a wholesome movie, and one of my favorites from this summer.
