Plant High School’s lacrosse player, Katie Fisher, has committed to Rutgers University’s women’s lacrosse team for 2023 to continue her athletic career. Fisher is determined to pursue lacrosse at a higher level, although she says it will not be the same without her high school teammates and friends.
When asked how she got into lacrosse, Fisher said, “My friend got me to join in fifth grade, and I have been in love with it ever since. I’ve always loved the team aspect and being able to represent the school, and I have always been competitive, which has always made me so determined.”
Throughout her lacrosse career, Fisher has always played midfield. Midfielders are the primary ball carriers of the game and control the pace. They are some of the fittest players on the field since they must cover the full length of the field. Despite her long experience, Fisher says she has never considered quitting or switching positions.
Although things have worked out now, Fisher did not always think it would turn out this way.
“A big challenge was when I sprained an ankle sophomore year. Additionally, I felt a lot of pressure when I was inconsistent in some of our games,” Fisher said.
Fisher explained that times like these were hard for her, but her friends, teammates, and family kept her motivated. Despite obstacles, Plant’s women’s lacrosse team went undefeated to the state championship last year and reached the final four two years ago. Plant hopes its lacrosse team can be as successful this year as last.
When asked why she picked Rutgers, Fisher said, “I was drawn to Rutgers because of the coaches and because it’s such a large and well-known school for sports.”
Although Fisher is determined to pursue her lacrosse career, she still finds time to referee lacrosse games and track meets. When not working or practicing, she says her favorite part of Plant is going to football games with friends, an activity she is determined to continue in college.
“Everyone on the team has always been so supportive and nice, which has created an amazing team atmosphere and has even made me more confident when I’m playing, talking to coaches, and even during my college admissions process,” Fisher said.
