Plant High School’s Model United Nations (MUN) Club is an organization that offers students a unique opportunity to engage with global issues and develop essential skills in diplomacy, public speaking, and critical thinking. The club has become a prominent participant in local and national conferences, fostering a spirit of international understanding and cooperation among its members.
The club simulates the workings of the United Nations, where students assume the roles of delegates from various countries and debate pressing global issues such as climate change, human rights, and international security. Through these topics, members begin to grasp complex problems and ideas.
Ryan Pavliga, a sophomore at Plant High School, said, “I am interested in global affairs, and one of my friends introduced it to me freshman year.” This hands-on experience not only enhances their knowledge of international relations but also hones their skills in leadership, teamwork, and effective communication.
Participation in MUN conferences is a highlight for club members, providing them the chance to compete and collaborate with students from other schools. These conferences often take place in various cities and schools, offering an exciting opportunity for students to travel.
However, when asked about the most challenging part of MUN, Pavliga said, “The debates can be six to eight hours long with little to no breaks whatsoever, which can become very tiring for everyone.”
The success of Plant High School’s MUN Club can be attributed to its dedicated student leader, Colin Felscher, and their school sponsor, Kimberly Marr. Through their involvement in the club, students are not only better prepared for their future academic and professional endeavors but are also more informed and engaged global citizens.
