On Nov. 11 every year, the United States takes a moment to honor and remember the brave soldiers who have served time in the armed forces and those killed in the country’s wars. Many men and women in our country have sacrificed to help and defend our country. Veterans Day is a day to honor American Veterans of all wars. On this day in November, we celebrate the dedication of these veterans to the United States.
The history of Veterans Day
Veterans Day was originally named Armistice Day, but it was later changed in 1954 to its current name by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. This day was originally set as a holiday to honor the end of the brutal warfare of 4 years, World War I. As years went by, the US became involved in more conflicts, and it became clear that Veterans of all wars should be recognized and honored. The first celebration of Veterans Day occurred in Birmingham, Ala, in 1947. It was declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower that this day should no longer be a day of mourn but a day of gratitude and celebration.
Celebrating Veterans Day
Veterans Day is celebrated across the United States. It’s a time for reflection and honoring. Many people are given a day off from work or school during this federal holiday. Families around the country take the time to remember the brave soldiers and honor loved ones who served in all different types of wars and military branches.
Many communities even hold parades that display their appreciation. Most parades take place in New York City and include military veterans. The New York City parade is the oldest and largest in the country and takes place along Fifth Avenue. The first parade took place in 1919.
Not only are there parades but also ceremonies that are held. The ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia is held at 11 a.m. each Nov.11. A wreath is laid on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and a parade of colors is
held. The ceremony expresses a moment of silence, and many people reflect on the significance of this day. The ceremony is open to the public and is free.
Veterans Day is an important day in our country. A day of gratitude and remembrance is spread across the United States. We will continue to acknowledge the veteran’s bravery every Nov.11. The country takes the time to understand what they fought for and why, admiring their hard work for our freedom.
