Gossip Girl, first aired in 2007, stars Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Ed Westwick, and Chace Crawford. The show follows the plot of an anonymous blogger website called Gossip Girl, which reports on teenagers at Cadence Private High School. The students are mainly from the Upper East Side or the upper class. The show focuses on the lives of Serena Van Der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Dan Humphrey, Chuck Bass and Nate Archibald.
In season one, the plot follows Serena’s return and adjustment, returning to New York from boarding school. Serena and Blair were best of friends until Serena decided to ghost her and disappear from boarding school for a year, causing extreme tension between the two. Blair is known as the queen of Cadence High School as she has her “minions” and designated lunch seats at the Met. Blair feels she is better than everyone and will do anything to keep that status, even if it jeopardizes her as a character. Dan Humphrey is introduced as Serena’s newfound love, even though he isn’t “socially acceptable” as he is from a lower-class family. I personally loved their relationship together. He balanced her out by keeping her humble as the season went on. Chuck Bass is known as inconsiderate, selfish, and narcissistic as he relishes a life of prostitutes, alcoholism and drug problems. He does grow to be much more loveable, but for the first few episodes, he is not a fan favorite. In season one, Nate Archibald has been Blair’s boyfriend since kindergarten. Nate comes from an elite family known as the Vanderbilts; however, that does not affect him as a character. He reminds me of Dan as they are similar in attitude as well as morals.
Gossip Girl is a constant inconvenience to these students at Cadence, as every little piece of drama in their lives is posted or sent to this anonymous blog. From all the drama posted, each character goes to different lengths to solve their problems, some more vulgar solutions than others. I enjoyed the concept of the show and the characters. I’m still watching the show and enjoying it a lot. If you like Gilmore Girls or drama shows in general, I recommend this show to you.
