It’s that time of year again when Tampa gets ready for its Gasparilla Pirate Invasion. Police are starting preparations to make sure everyone is safe. Although Gasparilla is a very fun event in Tampa, the New Orleans terrorist attack that happened just a week ago is causing people to be concerned for their safety.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor says Gasparilla is being approached with more precautions this year. Castor has stated Gasparilla is still happening because it is a signature event in Tampa, but there will be thousands of people to protect. State agencies will join local law enforcement, and federal agencies like the U.S Coast Guard, ATF and the FBI will be looking after everyone attending the parade
The concerns were raised after it was discovered the New Orleans terror suspect, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, came to Tampa in October, 65 days before the attack and met up with some of his Tampa friends, and it was spread that he was planning on doing something on Gasparilla that could harm people.
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw says the department has experience keeping the public safe during large events. The FBI wouldn’t say where in Tampa Jabbar traveled, but they will be on high alert during the parade. Police Chief Bercaw will collaborate with federal, state, and local law enforcement as well as local event organizers to keep everyone safe and allow people to be stress-free and enjoy the parade.
