Plant High School’s mock trial team has a significant impact on its students, providing invaluable skills and experiences that go beyond the courtroom. Participating in mock trials gives students a deep understanding of the legal system and helps them develop critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills that are essential in many areas of life.
Mock trial stands out from many other clubs at Plant High School due to its competitive nature and connection to the legal field. The club focuses on one case each year, which is used for all competitions and practices until the end of the season. This approach benefits students by honing their research and planning skills.
The club president, Hana Ferraro, a senior, shared her experience. “I’ve learned excellent public speaking skills and how to effectively communicate information,” Ferraro said.
In addition to personal growth opportunities, being part of the mock trial team can enhance students’ college applications.
Although Ferraro leads the students, the club is supported by school volunteer Tamara Phillips. Judge Nash also volunteers to supervise and advise practices at his courtroom at the Edgecomb Courthouse downtown.
When asked about her favorite part of mock trial, Ferraro said, “Being able to bond with the team at practices and competitions.”
Mock trial fosters teamwork and teaches students the importance of working towards a common goal. Although it is not an easy task, participating in mock trials is a crucial part of the club members’ journey.
