On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Rebecca Yarros released the third book of the Empyrean series, “Onyx Storm.” Following the release of the first book, “Fourth Wing,” and the second, “Iron Flame,” in 2023, fans waited over a year for “Onyx Storm.” Its release featured two special editions in the United States.
The first edition, containing specialized book pages with dragons on the exterior of each page, was sold only in stores at Barnes & Noble and online at Amazon on the day of release. The second edition was sold exclusively at Target and contains specialized pages, unique maps, and fan art selected by the author.
The series is set at Basgiath War College, located on The Continent. The protagonist is Violet Sorrengail, who, in “Fourth Wing,” is forced to cross the dreaded parapet and become a cadet for the Riders Quadrant of Basgiath.
While learning to become a Rider in her Quadrant, Sorrengail meets Xaden Riorson, known as an intimidating figure, who is her Wingleader. She must follow his orders but soon learns to stand up for herself and harness her strengths when fighting, rather than focusing on her weaknesses.
At the end of “Fourth Wing,” Sorrengail and Riorson encounter venin, humans who have used dark magic to steal power from the land. This power allows the venin to drain the land and its inhabitants.
With their survival, the series continues in “Iron Flame,” which follows Sorrengail’s journey through her second year at Basgiath War College as she navigates being separated from Riorson more than they are accustomed to.
While still facing troubles caused by venin, the two reunite and fight to protect their home from the draining villains. Together, while losing friends and family, the couple must navigate hardships and unite to protect the places and people they hold dear. Their journey continues with the release of “Onyx Storm,” followed by two more books to complete the series.
