On Sunday, March 2, the 97th annual Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, took place in Los Angeles. Held at the Dolby Theatre, the Oscars gather Hollywood’s most popular actors for a night of jokes, awards, and tributes.
To start the show, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sang songs from their recent movie Wicked, entrancing the audience and even bringing tears to actor Michelle Yeoh’s eyes. After that, comedian and host Conan O’Brien made his first appearance of the night on the Dolby stage. In his opening monologue, O’Brien made jokes about celebrities’ outfits and movie performances, gaining wholehearted laughs from the audience.
The first award of the night was for best supporting actor. Presented by Robert Downey Jr., last year’s best supporting actor winner, the award went to Kieran Culkin for his performance in the movie A Real Pain. Written by Jesse Eisenberg, the movie’s only Oscar went to Culkin, but Eisenberg also received a nomination for best original screenplay.
The best supporting actor award was followed by the award for best supporting actress, won by Zoe Saldaña for her role in the movie Emilia Pérez.
Saldaña was in tears during her acceptance speech, thanking her co-stars, family, and friends. She also addressed how she was the first person of Dominican origin to win an Oscar and how winning an Oscar was her dream come true.
The four major Oscar categories-best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress-were all won by stars of four different movies. Adrien Brody, who starred in The Brutalist, won best actor, and Mikey Madison won best actress for her performance in Anora.
