Drake’s new album, “Some Sexy Songs 4 U,” was released on Valentine’s Day. The 21-track album collaborates with PartyNextDoor and has sparked a range of opinions among listeners. As a high school student who’s been a fan of Drake since before high school, I was eager to listen to the new album and gather my friends’ thoughts.
In the album, Drake and PartyNextDoor maintain their classic style with catchy hooks and themes of love and heartbreak. The album features R&B, hip-hop, and trap elements, and students at Plant High School have shared their views.
Sophomore Lily Swank said, “My favorite songs on the album are ‘CN Tower’ and ‘Nokia.’ I love singing to ‘CN Tower’ especially.” Swank continued, “I love when the beat drops in ‘Gimme a Hug.’ It’s a perfect song to blast on the speakers.”
Aaliyah Pernell Jackson, another sophomore, said, “I didn’t like the album. To be honest, I liked only one good song, and it’s ‘CN Tower.'”
Tsoupeis, a sophomore, shared a similar opinion: “I love the songs ‘Die Trying,’ ‘CN Tower,’ and ‘Nokia. ‘CN Tower’ and ‘Nokia’ are becoming fan favorites, offering memorable hooks and chill vibes. Cyci’s mention of ‘Die Trying’ points to the album’s ability to capture a more intense side that resonates with some listeners.
Tracks like “Nokia” are infectious, with beats that make it hard not to nod along. The collaboration between Drake and PartyNextDoor shines, especially in the more refined R&B tracks that play to their strengths.
There’s also drama surrounding the song “Gimme a Hug,” where Drake appears to throw shade at Kendrick Lamar, continuing a longstanding feud between the two rappers.
I feel “Some Sexy Songs 4 U” has highs and lows. The beats are impressive, and PartyNextDoor’s contribution is significant, but I miss the more emotional nature of Drake’s previous albums. It’s an enjoyable listen, and some songs will likely become party hits, but it might fall short for longtime fans expecting something more profound.
Overall, “Some Sexy Songs 4 U” is receiving mixed reviews from my fellow students. Some enjoy the catchy beats and moods, while others find it dull. One thing is sure, though—it’s creating a stir, which can only be positive for Drake.
