The lights began to dim, and a wave of excitement washed over the audience as Michael Jackson’s iconic hit, ‘Beat It,’ began with this powerful guitar melody. On March 2, the Straz Center was magically transformed into a vibrant stage. His electrifying music, signature moves, and enduring legacy ignited an exhilarating experience I’ll never forget. Hearing his music in such an intimate setting was memorable and emotional.
As someone from a newer generation, Jackson has never gotten old. His music moves through all generations because of his timeless albums and hits. I consider myself a big fan and admirer of his talent and music, so when I heard that this musical came to Tampa, I knew I had to go see it. I had some pretty high expectations because I’ve seen musicals in the past at the Straz that were very well written and performed, but this one exceeded them. During the first act, the play delves into Jackson’s early years, portraying his rise to fame.
The play was written impressively and creatively; it was set up as the rehearsals for his last tour, and then his past, from his childhood to his teenage years, was woven in between. There was a pestering interviewer who brought up some challenging topics about Jackson’s past, like his traumatic childhood, having an abusive father, and never having a real childhood to his present-day substance abuse problems.
Jordan Markus played the role and did an outstanding job. His dancing was intense and captivating, and his voice—not just his singing voice but also the way he talked—was eerily similar.
Because of the thoughtful song selection, the audience experienced various emotions, from joy to nostalgia. It was a mix of his most famous and underrated songs that the audience might not have known. That shows that the people making the play knew his music well. While the musical captures Jackson’s iconic performances, it also addresses the darker aspects of his life, such as his struggles with fame.
In conclusion, this musical reminds us of the power of music to connect and inspire, ensuring that the King of Pop’s influence will continue to resonate with audiences new and old. As the final curtain fell, the applause echoed in celebration of a musical icon who remains unforgettable.
