On Aug. 10, 2022, freshman Fiyori Russom entered the halls of Plant High School for the first time. Almost three years later, as a junior, Russom has involved herself in numerous extracurriculars, expressing her love for the school and hopes for the future.
Russom is a part of the school’s track, cross country, and soccer teams, immersing herself in Plant’s athletic program. While doing these sports throughout the fall, winter, and spring semesters, Russom has maintained a 4.0 unweighted grade-point average and a 6.0 weighted GPA, placing her in the class of 2026’s top 10 percent.
“Soccer and track are definitely two of the more meaningful sports to me. I like track because I am able to see improvements individually, and everyone around me has a positive mindset. For soccer, I love the team aspect of it since we are all in it together. Whether we win or lose, the team is still supportive,” said Russom.
Along with athletic involvement, Russom is involved in Gold Rush, the school’s spirit club, the student class council, and the French Club.
According to Russom, “French Club means the most to me since I love French culture and getting to know a different part of the world.”
With all that she does, allocating time for school and all the extracurriculars Russom involves herself in can be challenging. Over the years, she has found a balance between school, sports, and social life.
“I am able to balance sports and extracurriculars with school depending on how much time I have to get stuff done and how productive I am in my free time. Usually, I find time to hang out with my friends while still handling other components of my life,” said Russom.
But why does she do all of this? What motivators, and inspirations have influenced Russom to work hard both in school and outside of it?
“College is definitely a motivator for me, but I work hard for myself because I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment and achieving my goals,” said Russom.
