The University of South Florida (USF) and the University of Florida (UF) met on Saturday, Aug. 6, in Gainesville for a non-conference football matchup. The game took place on UF’s home field and concluded with USF recording a win by a final score of 18–16.
The first quarter was low scoring with UF scoring the opening points of the game with a field goal from kicker Trey Smack. That score gave the Gators a 3–0 advantage, which remained through the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, USF tied the game with a field goal by Nico Gramatica. UF responded with two additional field goals from Smack, moving ahead 9–3. Before halftime, Gramatica added a second field goal for USF. At the break, the score was 9–6 in favor of UF.
The third quarter began with USF taking the lead for the first time. Wide receiver Keshaun Singleton scored a touchdown, and later in the quarter, the Bulls added two points with a safety. At the end of the third quarter, USF held a 15–9 lead.
In the fourth quarter, UF regained the lead with a touchdown scored by wide receiver Eugene Wilson III. That touchdown gave the Gators a one-point advantage. Later in the quarter, Gramatica converted his third field goal of the game for USF. That kick provided the Bulls with the final margin of victory. The game ended 18–16.
Scoring in the contest came primarily through field goals, with Smack recording three for UF and Gramatica recording three for USF. Each team scored one touchdown, and USF added a safety in the third quarter.
The outcome of the game placed USF ahead on the scoreboard at the conclusion of regulation. UF led after the first and second quarters, while USF led after the third and fourth quarters.
The game included contributions from special teams, offense, and defense on both sides. USF’s scoring drives were aided by successful kicking and a defensive play that produced a safety. Consistent field goal kicking and a single touchdown reception drove UF’s scoring.
A combination of these scoring plays determined the final result. Each quarter featured at least one scoring drive, and the lead changed multiple times across the game.
The matchup added another entry to the record of games between the two programs. Both teams demonstrated the ability to create scoring opportunities through special teams and offensive plays, as well as defensive efforts that limited touchdowns.
The official final score was University of South Florida 18, University of Florida 16.
This score left some fans feeling thrilled, and others disappointed. According to USF fan Emerson Porcelli (11), “this was just another game for USF; they deserved the win.” On the other hand, Gator fans such as Ben Gabriely (11) state, “Florida definitely has a lot to prove right now. Unfortunately, they proved a lot of doubters right who said they couldn’t compete at a high level. Their season may be coming to an end, considering the next teams they’re playing”. Whether you cheer for UF or USF, both teams performed well, and they can now continue to advance into the remainder of the season.
