It’s a ‘Love Story’ and Taylor Swift said yes!
Global phenomenon singer/songwriter, Taylor Swift, announced her engagement to Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce, on her Instagram on August 25, 2025, titling the post, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married!”
Swift and Kelce have been dating for two years. The couple began their relationship in the summer of 2023, during Swift’s three-hour, media-dominating, highest-grossing concert tour of all time. Dating speculation arose when Swift started attending Chiefs games regularly, accompanied by other high-profile artists.
Swift is known for planning ‘Easter Eggs’ up to years in advance for new songs, albums, and special announcements. However, Swift is not the only ‘Mastermind’ when it comes to getting attention! Kelce hosts a podcast, “New Heights,” alongside his brother, Jason Kelce, a former Philadelphia Eagles football center. After Kelce attended the aforementioned Eras Tour in July 2023, Kelce told the podcast he tried to give Swift a friendship bracelet – an Eras Tour staple for fans to create and share – with his phone number on it. However, security denied him a backstage pass. The three-time Super Bowl Champion sparked an internet frenzy among Swift fans, known as ‘Swifties,’ and caught the attention of Swift herself.
Two years and 30 million likes, in counting, later, fans of all ages are celebrating the engagement of the celebrity couple worldwide. Even right here, in Plant High School’s media center!
On Wednesday, August 27th, the day after the exciting news, librarian and Plant Book Club leader, Matt Penn, created a hotspot for students to take a selfie with cardboard cutouts of Swift and Kelce while listening to some of the pop star’s number one hits.
Sophomore ‘Swiftie’ Ella Gribbin shares the excitement she felt when walking into lunch and seeing the surprise. “I loved seeing the media center celebrate Taylor’s engagement! It was so fun to see Plant take part in pop culture, and it was such a fun way to celebrate with the cutouts.”
It was hard to miss the “Swift + Kelce Media Day” sign and dozens of pictures being taken with the festive decorations.
When asked about the motivation to create an event for the ‘Swiftie Students’ at Plant, Penn smiles. “I had the idea, then made the whiteboards and the posters. I called Ms. Porcelli, and she brought the cutouts. I thought Yearbook or Newspaper would want to capture this day!”
Plant responded positively to Penn’s efforts to create a fun, engaging moment. Selfies and pictures of students and faculty alike were sent to Christina Porcelli, capturing the celebration. Whether or not a fan of Taylor Swift’s music or the Chiefs, the media center brought all together to share a lunch period of commemoration.
“It was great to see the spread of happiness from the celebration going from the media center outwards.” Penn grins. “I also like Taylor Swift myself.”
