On Oct. 4, Florida State (22) held the game against the University of Miami (3) at Doak Campbell Stadium. This was a big game for both schools, and students at Plant High School were excited. When asked about the energy of the game, Silvia Hellman (9) responded, “The energy was not as good as past games, and I think that affected the game.”
So far, Florida State’s record is 3 – 2. The Noles beat Alabama, East Texas A&M and Kent State. Beating Alabama was important for the Noles, and they started the season strong. Florida State lost to Virginia and Miami. The Hurricanes’ record is 5-0, beating Notre Dame, B-CU, USF, UF and Florida State. After week 6 FSU is ranked #25 and Miami is ranked #2.
In the first quarter, Jake Weinberg (FSU) kicked a 23-yard field goal, which scored 3 points. After, CJ Daniels (Miami) scored a touchdown for Miami with 50 seconds left, having a good start to the game. After scoring the touchdown, Daniels recreated the iconic “War Chant” and celebrated with his team. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 7-3 in favor of Miami.
In the second quarter, Malachi Toney (Miami), a first-year student, scored a touchdown on a forty-four-yard pass from Carson Beck, the Miami quarterback. Toney was a key player in this win and had 7 catches for 107 yards. In the first half, Tommy Castellanos threw two interceptions, which both led to touchdowns for Miami. This gave Miami a big lead with the score being 14-3 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Toney scored another touchdown with a forty-yard pass from Carson Beck. Then Daniels scored another touchdown, celebrating again by singing the “War Chant” again. By the end of the third quarter, the score was 28-3 in favor of Miami.
In the fourth quarter, FSU came out and fought back. Lawayne McCoy scored an eight-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Castellanos. After, Randy Pittman Jr. scored another touchdown with 3 minutes left. Then Weinberg scored a 35-yard field goal with only 20 seconds left. Even though they came back, it was not enough to win.
Miami players celebrated and called themselves “BACK-TO-BACK STATE CHAMPS!” because they beat Florida State, South Florida and Florida. This win strengthened Miami’s position in the ACC network, moving them up to the 2nd seed in all of college football. Some key players for the Hurricanes were Beck, the quarterback, who threw 4 touchdowns, and Daniels, who scored 2 touchdowns.
Some of the Seminoles’ key players were Castellanos, the quarterback, who had 88 snaps. Although he threw 2 picks, he was the highest graded player on offense. Another key player was McCoy, who scored a touchdown and a 2-point pass.
Overall, it was a good game, but it ended with a home loss for Florida State. The Seminoles made too many unforced errors. Now, Florida State plays Pittsburgh on October 11, which is unranked. Hopefully, the Seminoles can pull off a win and continue to fight for the rest of the season.
