58th Annual Grammy Awards rewards artists

The night of Monday, Feb. 15 the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California hosted the 58th Annual Grammy Awards celebrating the year’s most notable music recording artists and performers. Stars flocked to the event, strolling down the red carpet before the awards commenced with a performance of “Out of the Woods” by Taylor Swift.

Kendrick Lamar led the night with the most nominations at eleven, followed by Taylor Swift and the Weeknd with seven nominations each. Swift took home the coveted Album of the Year award as well as Best Pop Vocal Album for “1989″, her first album officially listed in the Pop genre. This win made Swift the first female artist to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice. Lamar accepted Best Rap Album for “To Pimp a Butterfly” as well as Best Rap Song and Performance for “Alright”. The Weeknd won his first two Grammys for his album “Beauty Behind the Madness” (Best Urban Contemporary Album) and his song “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)” (Best R&B Performance).

Record of the Year went to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars for “Uptown Funk”, and Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance went to Ed Sheeran for “Thinking Out Loud.” Justin Bieber took home his very first Grammy award in the Best Dance Recording category for his collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo on “Where Are Ü Now”. Alabama Shakes took home their first three Grammys for Best Rock Song and Performance (“Don’t Wanna Fight”) and Best Alternative Album for their sophomore album, “Sound & Color”. The wildly popular Broadway musical “Hamilton” accepted the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.

However, the awards weren’t the only excitement from Monday night. As well as Taylor Swift, a number of other artists showcased their talents with live performances. Lady Gaga impressed audience members with a touching tribute to recently passed icon David Bowie. The Weeknd performed his hit single “Can’t Feel My Face”. Kendrick Lamar infused a political message into his performance of “The Blacker the Berry” and “Alright”, with his set mimicking a jail and sporting handcuffs. Perhaps the most anticipated performance of the night, Adele’s rendition of “All I Ask” was unfortunately marred by technical audio errors.

The night wasn’t devoid of drama either. As Taylor Swift accepted her Grammy for Album of the Year, she addressed in her speech her being mentioned in a recent released song by Kanye West: “…There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success, or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday, when you get where you are going, you will look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world,” the singer said.
