Winston, Bucs, offer fans a view into possible future

Dominant play by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in last Friday’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns offers fans of the team to get an idea of how good this team could be.

QB Jameis Winston showed his ability to start games fast and get the offense going, something that has been lacking the first two preseason games. His chemistry with WR Mike Evans shown on Friday had fans dreaming of the possibilities. Evans had 115 receiving yards along with a touchdown. Winston had 259 passing yards along with two touchdowns.

If this type of play continues from the QB-WR duo of Winston and Evans, the Buccaneers offense could possibly skyrocket into the elite group. The Buccaneers had the fifth most offensive yards last season, so a jump to a lethal offense isn’t unlikely. Add into the mix that second-year WR Adam Humphries has played well in the preseason, and WR Vincent Jackson is back healthy after a season where he missed six games with injuries, it seems very possible.

The defensive side of the ball also had much success. The defensive line played great with DT Gerald McCoy returning after missing last week’s game in Jacksonville. On a night where defensive ends Jacquies Smith and Noah Spence each had two and one sacks, it is imaginable that the Buccaneers defensive line can play far better than it did last year.

Special teams made a huge impact on the game and likewise gave fans an idea of how the upcoming season could go. Rookie kicker Roberto Aguayo 6-6 on field goal attempts, calming the mind of Buccaneer fans who may have worried about him after he started the preseason going 3-5 on kicks. If he continues to play well, Aguayo will prove he was worth a second round pick.

In the return game, it was all positives as well. WR Adam Humphries scored on a 73 yard touchdown punt return. Should the Buccaneers continue to gather success from the return game, it will allow the offense to begin their drive closer to the end zone and give them a better chance to put points on the board.
