Football team defeats Armwood, game recap
The Plant versus Armwood football game, which was televised on Bright House Network’s “Game of the Week” was a narrow Plant victory, with the Panthers improving to a 4-0 record on the season.
The Panthers were coming off a performance at home against Leto, cruising to a 64-0 victory. The Armwood Hawks were also fresh off a shutout victory, beating Chamberlain by a score of 33-0. Early on it was clear this game wasn’t going to be one-sided, as Armwood failed to score on their first drive.
Coach Robert Weiner and company capped off their first drive of the game with a 53-yard touchdown run by Ty Thompson, junior. They didn’t find success on the next drive however, and with an Armwood blocked punt returned to the 30 yard line in Panther territory, the Hawks struck back.
Ohio State commit Brian Snead capped of the short drive with a rushing touchdown. And with a failed two-point conversion, the first quarter ended at Dad’s Stadium with a 7-6 Panther lead.
Armwood and Plant traded back-and-forth scoring drives to start the second quarter, including a second Brian Snead touchdown, and senior Quarterback Dane Franzten finding fellow senior Wide Receiver Juwan Burgess for a touchdown as well.
And with a Nick Rice field goal to close out the second quarter, Plant went into the locker rooms at halftime leading 17-14.
In the third quarter, after a Nick Rice field goal and a Darren McNeal fumble, the result was a bulldozing quarterback run by Franzten, and just like that, the Panthers go out in front 26-14.
With the student section at Dad’s Stadium proclaiming the game was over and ready to start the celebration, they forgot one thing: They’re up against the third best team in the state, and the 12th best team in the entire United States of America.
Armwood Quarterback Devin Black went straight to work. He drove his team down the length of the field, and after a costly dropped pass, they bounced back, and for the third time of the game, Snead drove in a one yard touchdown.
It seemed that all Plant had to do was run the clock out and it would be a certain victory. But the Falcon pass rush got to Franzten quickly, and he fumbled, resulting in a Falcon touchdown recovery.
In a unique sequence of events, the tide switched to Armwood, as they found themselves with the lead. But Franzten exercised his deamons from the last possession, redeeming himself en route to a Nick Rice 37-yard Field Goal putting Plant with the lead.
But it seemed that with 1:47 left in the ballgame, it was too much time for Black to lead one final comeback. With no timeouts for Armwood, they had a sense of urgency to try and win the game.
The game appeared to come down to the final play on a long 4th down with 47 seconds remaining, Black scrambled and found daylight, shaking off countless Panther defenders for the much needed first down.
And with 5 ticks remaining, the Panthers went into Prevent defense, as the game was going to come down to a last-second Hail Mary attempt. Black heaved one to the endzone to try and win it, but it was intercepted by senior Cornerback Whop Philyor, and that was it.
In a rematch from a year ago, Plant handed Armwood it’s first non-playoff loss since 2012, coincidentally also a Plant win.
