La La Land Impresses musical audiences

After being nominated for seven global globes, La La Land tells the story of an unexpected, epic love. Filled with singing and dance routines, the movie only appeals to a narrow audience.

Starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, the movie focuses on how the characters of Mia and Sebastian unexpectedly fall in love.

The movie transitions between the four seasons in a very realistic way by following the characters through activities typical of that scenes season and designing the props to match the expected weather.

Unique to the theaters today, La La Land is modeled more similarly to a musical then  the typical movie. The film includes masterfully choregraphed routines that will leave the spectator in awe. These dance routines include anywhere from two to 30 people, which keep the film interesting.

Another play-like trait of the film is the soundtrack. Throughout the movie characters can be found singing to each other instead of trading dialogue. The whimsical voices of the actors add more meaning to each scene.

However, the amount of singing included in the film is a lot for the typical movie customer. The two hour and eight minute film can seem very long and drawn out for a person who doesn’t enjoy musicals theater.

The most disappointing aspect of the film is the ending. For around two hours spectators follow the two main characters falling in love, and through the stages of their relationship. But the ending of the film, which takes place five years later, offers a surprising ending. The couple both achieving their dreams but not ending up together.

So the film takes spectators on a roller coaster of emotions, falling in love with Mia and Sebastin as a couple and then being shocked as they don’t end up together.

Overall La La Land offers the perfect night out for someone who loves movies that include singing and dancing, but is a nightmare for the hopeless romantic.
