Girls soccer recognizes senior players

As the soccer season nears its end, the girl’s varsity team took the time to recognize their senior players. The game, played at home against Newsome, was a loss for them. Despite this, the girls walked off the field smiling and celebrating the five seniors.

“It was really memorable having all my friends and family come out to support me on senior night. It also was just a time to really reflect on what the program at Plant meant to us and to see the effect it has on not only us but the people around us,” senior Savannah Tindall said.

This night gave seniors the chance to think about their time on the team over the past four years. Morgan Calzon, senior, reflects on what made senior night so important to her.

“Tearing my ACL my junior year was really hard, knowing there was a good possibility I wouldn’t be able to play soccer my senior year. This year, I worked on my recovery as I was the team manager. I was finally cleared and have been able to play a little bit recently. At the beginning of the season, my coach and I made a goal for me to be able to recover in enough time to play my senior night. Being able to make that goal a reality really made the hard work I put into recovery worth it. And more than anything seeing that a lot of my friends came out to support the girl’s soccer seniors on our senior night meant the world to me,” Calzon said.

The seniors included Allyson Abbey, Nicki Barrow, Morgan Calzon, Savannah Tindall and Lyndsey Tyl. The event began with the entire team wearing “we love our seniors” shirts to school on Friday that featured a picture of the five senior girls. Before the game, the younger team members met at the field to hang signs and set up the field for senior night.

“[It’s important to honor the senior players] because they’ve been with the team for four years and they all have worked so hard to get us where we are today. And, of course, we want to show them how much we really appreciate all that they’ve done,” junior Emma Platt said.

During halftime, the girls each walked with their family members onto the field while the announcer read out a list of all their accomplishments to the crowd. Then, each girl was presented with flowers, a notebook that had notes from all of their younger teammates and a framed photo collage. After the game the girls had a team dinner and ended the night eating cake and spending time together.
