Students make Groundhog Day predictions
Once per year, people turn on their TVs in the morning to see if winter will continue for six more weeks, or if it will finally be spring. This is all predicted based on whether or not the Groundhog sees his shadow when he comes out of hibernation.
Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania hosts the largest groundhog day celebration. Here, the most widely recognized groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil Sowerby, is observed emerging from his burrow. The groundhog has been correct in his prediction 39% of the time. This year will be his 130th decision.
If the groundhog sees his shadow, this means that winter will be longer. If he does not see his shadow, it will become spring.
We asked students what their predictions for this Groundhog Day, Thursday February 2nd.
On Thursday, the groundhog saw his shadow, indicating that there will be 6 more weeks of winter.
