Announcement of title of Star Wars Episode Eight leads to fan speculation

Ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, every announcement regarding the Star Wars franchise has been a headliner. Their latest announcement was no different.

Last week, with Lucasfilm and Disney coming off of the heels of their first spin off film, “Rogue One”, it was announced that the title of the eighth installment of the Skywalker saga would be “The Last Jedi.” Director Rian Johnson has previously mentioned how the title has been known for a while.

This announcement has led to rampant fan discussion regarding who the “Last Jedi” may be.

Some fans believe the “Last Jedi” could be Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker or Daisy Ridley’s Rey (Skywalker?). It could also be both of them, as the word Jedi is both singular and plural. Another possibility is that Kylo Ren may be the last Jedi, as after all, he is part of the Skywalker lineage. Or could they throw the fans a curveball and make the “Last Jedi” a shocker to fans.

Needless to say, this title is going to be a translation nightmare for languages that differentiate between male and female, along with singular and plural.

Supposedly, there have already been translations that have Jedi as singular and male, most likely referring to Luke Skywalker or possibly Kylo Ren.

Star Wars “The Last Jedi” is set release on December 15.
