MLS season to kick off this weekend
After the thriller that was the MLS Cup this past November between the Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC, all of the teams in MLS have gone through an offseason in hopes of winning it all.
The reigning champs, the Sounders, look to build to their resume of championships. They will rely on a number of different players. They have Jordan Morris, who scored 12 goals in his Rookie of the Year Campaign.
Also, they will have a whole season of Nicholas Lodiero, who created an instant spark after joining the team mid-season last season. Also, Clint Dempsey will be returning after missing most of the year with USMNT Duties and dealing with an irregular heartbeat. With all these guys returning, and not having lost a key cog in their lineup, it is clear why Seattle is the favorite to repeat as champions.
Another thing to look out for this season is the new expansion teams coming to the league. These are Atlanta United and Minnesota United. Needless to say, these teams could have not built their rosters any more different.
Minnesota United has not used a single DP spot on their roster, leaning more on their players from their NASL days. These include 2014 league MVP Miguel Ibarra and Christian Ramirez. Also, the team traded for Kevin Molino from Orlando City for a record amount of allocation money. Molino played for current Minnesota Manager Adrian Heath while in Orlando. If these players are able to produce similarly to how they did in the NASL, Minnesota United will be a team to look for.
In contrast, Atlanta United went with a completely different philosophy than Minnesota. Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who has previously coached the Argentina National team along with Barcelona, manages the team. His presence has definitely been seen in the team’s international signings.
The team has signed Miguel Almiron, a player who was targeted by Arsenal of the Premier League. Also, they have signed Kenwyne Jones, the captain of the Trinidad and Tobago National team, and Josef Martinez. They have also signed multiple USMNT members. They signed Greg Garza and will be receiving Goalie Brad Guzan from Middlesbrough of the Premier League in the summer. With all of these interesting signings, Atlanta United is being held to pretty high expectations for a first year expansion team.
Lets now view two more teams who have made some interesting moves, both of which are entering their third season of the league, Orlando City SC and New York City FC.
Orlando has made a bunch of moves that plan on creating an identity that manager Jason Kreis. In the offseason, the team spent plenty of time on defense, signing Jonathan Spector from Birmingham City.
Also, they traded for Donny Toia from Atlanta United after they selected him in the expansion draft. Along with that, the team traded away players who were deemed not needed by Kreis, these include Kevin Molino and USMNT participant Brek Shea.
NYCFC has also adjusted their roster in many different ways. The team lost Frank Lampard to retirement, along with signaling that Mix Diskerud will not be in the team’s plan. In counter to these moves, the team has signed another of different players. They signed Maxi Moralez to a DP contract, along with receiving Yangel Herrera from Manchester City on loan.
The Vancouver Whitecaps are a team to watch as well. Vancouver went out and signed Fredy Montero on loan from Tianjin Teda in Coloumbia. Montero has also played with the Seattle Sounders from 2009 to 2012, where he scored 60 goals.
With Montero coming into the fold, along with returning players such as Pedro Morales and Kekuta Manneh, the Whitecaps may be a team to keep an eye out for.
With the league as whole revamping their rosters, it is clear that this MLS Season is going to be an exciting one.
