Rick’s Cafe lights up stage

For 20 years, Rick’s Cafe has been an opportunity for the chorus students to share their love for Broadway and singing. Straying away from traditional, folk and classical pieces the chorus is known for, Rick’s Cafe is a showcase of the chorus’ greatest talents.

Every year, students come together to perform group songs, duets, and solos after rehearsing for months on end.
The history of Rick’s Cafe is taken from Casablanca’s Rick’s Cafe. Originally, Rick’s Cafe included having coffee and food served as the audience observed Broadway-styled performances. However, Rick’s Cafe grew so huge, the Plant cafeteria could no longer hold the amount of people who lined up to see the show. The show was then moved to the auditorium to accommodate the growing audience where it has been since.

In addition to individual acts, the choirs at Plant, Junior Varsity, Varsity, and Varsity Chorale, all perform selections from different Broadway plays. This year’s choir ensemble selections include songs from Grease, Chicago and Oklahoma. Solos, duets, and smaller group ensembles include selections from a numerous amount of plays including, The Addams Family, Pocahontas, Matilda, A Chorus Line, We Will Rock You and many more.

Instead of offering a single show, the chorus puts on a total of three shows in order to give everyone a chance to attend. The dates this year are February 27, 28 and March 1. Shows begin promptly at 7:00PM in the auditorium. Tickets for this year’s shows are already on sale: $10 for adults and $5 for students. For tickets, see Mr. Yost or another chorus student.

Seeing Rick’s Cafe seems to be a truly special experience for all ages. It will not be a show to miss.
