Purple love encompasses February
February is the Month of Domestic Violence- not to promote it but to end it.
Teen domestic violence, violence between same-sex partners, as well as emotional abuse are all recognized in this special month and people around the nation take time to spread awareness.
The Tampa Bay area does its part and communities and organizations like the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay provide safe facilities for victims to stay in and provide hotlines, websites and events to raise awareness and get people involved.
There are also several volunteer opportunities for anyone who wants to get involved. Such as joining the Crisis Center staff or volunteering on the Youth Action Committee.
Nearly one of three teens report some sort of abuse, whether it be sexual, physical or emotional. Studies from college students report that nearly 43% of women in college will face similar assault.
The Youth Action Committee also hosts the upcoming Teen Summit, with workshops and volunteering opportunities. Food and sympathy will be spread as guest speakers talk about past abuse and overcoming it.
Social media can also spread awareness, like the “#expectrespect” or posting stories and support for others to see.
Each student can become an advocate against domestic abuse by supporting their community, city or even state by talking to government officials, voting participation and acting when someone is abused.
This is the month to show support on domestic violence. Make sure to wear purple this month, because that’s the official color. Search up signs of abuse with relationships you are your friends might have so you can be wary of someone who you know that could be in a bad place.
