The Netflix film “Sierra Burgess is a Loser” appeals to a high school audience due to the message about personal appearance. By the end of the movie, the main character Sierra Burgess learned to embrace her true self.

High school can be a great life experience for some students, while for other students it can be tough to get by socially. Many students feel that they need to obtain a particular appearance to fit in with people to get approval from social groups.

Recently, Netflix released a movie called “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser” which displays a great message that speaks to high schoolers: appearance is not everything, and it is the personality that matters.

The film features a romance sparked by mistakenly sent messages from a popular football player named Jamey to Sierra Burgess, who is known as a band geek at her school.

Throughout the film, Sierra is resistant on revealing the truth that she is not the high school cheerleader that Jamey thinks she is. She hides behind a phone screen because she is self-conscious on what he will think about her appearance.

The main character was well-played by Shannon Purser, who did an excellent job of portraying an intelligent girl who no one really notices.

The character of Sierra Burgess, however, could have been improved upon by having her not care about what anyone thinks about her. By doing this, she can set a good example for girls dealing with the struggles of appearance to be well-liked.

Sierra overlooks that she is very talented and that she has many other great qualities that make her who she is. Her character is shown as weak because she does not embrace who she really is; instead, she hides her true self.

Jamey, played by Noah Centineo, is not the typical egotistical football-player type. Jamey is different than the assumed stereotype because he has a heart of gold and he does not care about appearance.

He is a firm believer in the concept that personality is what makes a person who they really are, not appearance. The film does a great job at displaying the portrayal of what it is like to be just brains but no beauty in high school.

“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser” is a fantastic movie that can spark emotions of joy and is surprisingly not corny like a typical high school movie where the popular kids always end up with each other.

There were many great feel-good moments that warm the heart. After watching this movie, it might give the audience the courage to accept who they really are instead of hiding all the things that make one unique.
