Netflix is known for pumping out hours of content and creating new originals quite frequently, so cuts to shows with lower ratings or less viewership happen annually.

Multiple shows have recently been cancelled by the popular streaming service, Netflix. The startup dates for filming secondary seasons of these shows were unbeknownst to the viewers and many seemed to be held up due to COVID-19, but on Aug. 21 they were let in on the fact that these shows will not be returning.

Netflix is known for pumping out hours of content and creating new originals quite frequently, so cuts to shows with lower ratings or less viewership happen annually. These most recent cuts, however, have caused an outrage amongst many viewers who loved shows such as The Society, I Am Not Okay With This, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. When the announcement that these shows would not continue, fans took to social media to express their disappointment.

The hashtag ‘netflixisoverparty’ began to trend on twitter and many users demanded the renewal of their favorite shows.

Netflix’s decision regarding these cancellations is reportedly rooted from a multitude of different reasons, the first being expenses. As Netflix shows continue, they tend to cost more to keep running, so the company usually opts for numerous shows with a limited number of seasons. Additionally, acknowledgement from the mainstream media plays a major role in keeping a television show going.

Originals that have exceed past the notorious, one to three season run, are some of the most controversial or have a mass amount of positive reception from the media. Shows that meet those marks include Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why and Orange Is the New Black. These shows have a minimum of four consecutive seasons (Stranger Things being confirmed for their fourth) and have all been either praised or criticized by the general public, which brings in a level of intrigue for new viewers and get them to continually watch.

Although Netflix’s system for generating content will constantly result in the cancellation of many people’s beloved shows, directors and produces encourage fans to re-watch and make up their own theories about what happens next in their favorite characters lives.
