State Thespian Festival recognizes student performances

This past week, March 24 through March 28, members of the thespian club participated at the State Thespian Festival at the Tampa Convention Center. “State festival is a time when all of the thespians from around florida who qualify come together in Tampa. We go to workshops and compete in things ranging from one act plays to monologues to costume design, etc.” Julia Burgin, senior, said. An all senior group of students including Summer Provance, Orlagh O’Rourke, Rusheenie Wilson, Julia Cagno, and Burgin earned an Excellent overall ranking for their ensemble acting performance. “I got to go and compete with my ensemble acting scene who got an excellent. Each school is allowed to bring 5 total performances to compete,” Burgin said. The group pantomime performance, a more theatrical entertainment, earned a Superior ranking.

Senior Alanna Gonzalez and junior Mary Olive Gauthier each performed solo singing performances at the competition. Gauthier earned a perfect score and a straight Superior ranking. Additionally, she was selected by the judges to perform in the Critic’s Choice Showcase after being classified as the number one performer in her round. Gonzalez also received a straight Superior ranking for her solo musical performance, however she incorporated a uniquely choreographed dance routine into the performance. “The solo required tons of practice so that I could build my stamina up to where I could both sing and dance at the same time. I choreographed the entire number by myself and had been rehearsing for countless hours since August so earning straight superiors felt so rewarding! It was definitely the perfect way to end my senior year,” Gonzalez said. Gauthier participated in a duet musical performance with senior Jamie Karr in which they received a perfect score and straight Superior. They were also chosen to perform in the Critic’s Choice Showcase, having ranked as the number one group in their round.
