As fall sports come to an end, the start of winter sports marks a new season for student-athletes. On Nov. 4, Plant High School hosted its first home soccer game of the season against Gaither High School. This match was the first season game for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
The boys’ team secured a 2-0 win over Gaither, with goals scored by Seniors Callan Nelson and Toby Burnett. The girls’ team also performed strongly, finishing with a 4-0 win. Senior Angelina Gianelli, Sophomore Mia Crane and Sophomore Madeline Miranda scored goals. Both teams demonstrated communication and organization on the field, reflecting the preparation that went into their preseason training.
Players shared that the pre-season games have helped the teams identify their strengths and areas for improvement. Junior Anna Frick expressed confidence in the girls’ team’s performance and future goals, saying, “The season is going well so far, we had a super strong preseason playing good teams, and our goals for the season are trying to go to nationals.” Frick’s comments reflect the team’s motivation and focus on long-term goals, which the team can work together to achieve.
Senior Mark Zajac from the boys’ team noted that the season’s start has been encouraging. “I think it’s been great so far because we tied to Tampa Prep and beat Gaither, which was really big,” Zajac said. He mentioned that one of his personal goals is to defeat Berkeley, a local rival, and that teamwork has been an essential factor in their recent success. “The team environment is very productive and we have good team chemistry,” he added, emphasizing that collaboration and communication play key roles in their performance.
Nelson also commented on how the boys’ team has progressed since previous years. “The season has been pretty solid this year, and my goal is for us to win our district and do really well in states,”Nelson said. When asked about the team’s dynamic, he added, “We are a very technical team this year with a good amount of talent. This year we have connected very well and played very composed compared to previous years.” Nelson’s remarks highlight how experience and teamwork contribute to their overall improvement and strategy.
Junior Emma Sullivan, a member of the girls’ team, shared similar enthusiasm for the months ahead. “I’m excited for the season because soccer season is always fun while still being competitive,” she said.
With both teams off to a strong start, Plant’s soccer program looks forward to the remainder of the season. As they continue to practice and compete, players hope to build on their early success and maintain focus on teamwork, consistency, and sportsmanship. The upcoming matches will test their growth and determination as the winter sports season unfolds.
