The hustle and bustle of the holiday season brings sweet treats, sweater weather and acts of generosity.
Plant High School is implementing community service this season throughout all of Plant’s diverse programs, proving that Plant’s programs extend far beyond the classroom.
Students across campus are coming together to make a difference. Plant service clubs, such as Anchor, are organizing drives and volunteering in the community, while the Plant Chorus fills Tampa Bay with festive melodies and the Plant Sailing team charts a course toward kindness. Each group, in its own unique way, demonstrates that service and school spirit are closely intertwined.
Serving Up Holiday Spirit
Giving back to the community is always the highlight of the year for Plant’s service programs. Anchor, Zeta and Kiwi are a few of the all-girl service clubs at Plant. During the year, these clubs participate in events such as Panther Prowl, Relay for Life and various volunteer opportunities around Tampa Bay.
The holidays are a prime time for these clubs to participate in community and Plant events that are giving back to Tampa Bay communities that may be less fortunate or just need a little joy.
This year, Anchor Service Club is participating in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church’s ‘Candy Cane Lane Trunk or Treat.’
Students will arrive at the event in decorated cars and participate in activities with the children. This includes face painting, games, and of course, delicious candy canes.
Anchor’s sponsor and AP Literature teacher, Natasha Walker, shares the importance of Anchor’s contribution to the ‘Trunk or Treat at Christmas!’
“It’s a great experience to celebrate with the community! It’s a lot of fun every year – we’ve really enjoyed doing it,” Walker said. “With Holy Trinity’s new middle school, it will be great to have Anchor mix in with the girls.”
Anchor is not the only service club spreading cheer. Plant Zeta has teamed up with the Key Club, a boys’ service club, to create goodie bags for faculty. Plant’s Kiwi Club has hosted a clothing drive, with more holiday events to come!
Voices Of the Season
Plant Chorus is sharing more than famous holiday tunes this season! This year, students have volunteered at organizations such as The Humane Society of Tampa Bay and Metropolitan Ministries. Students are donating not only time, but also kindness to the community.
As Plant Chorus prepares for the winter production of ‘Madrigals,’ inspired by the musical “Princess and the Mattress,” students go beyond the chorus room to Hyde Park!
Members of the two Plant a cappella groups – Pink Panthers and Pawcappella – are preparing to perform holiday carols during the Hyde Park Home tour on Dec. 6.
Ella Zeltser (10) feels the impact of the event, bringing more than just sweet harmonies.
“I am so excited to sing at the Hyde Park Holiday Home Tour,” Zeltser said. “I love being involved in my community with my friends.”
Plant Chorus will be spreading joy and music in the neighborhood, appealing to all audiences.
All Aboard for Giving Back
Plant Sailing is getting ‘on board’ with holiday cheer. The varsity team is giving members of Plant’s ‘Best Buddies’ an opportunity to cruise around on their sailboats, spending time on the water.
Captain Shea McGraw (11) shares the inspiring purpose of the event.
“The Best Buddies sailing event is one of our favorite traditions,” McGraw said. “Everyone has a great time on the water, and seeing the smiles and excitement from the Best Buddies participants makes it even more special. It reminds us that sailing isn’t just about racing or competition, it’s about connection, inclusion and doing something that makes a difference together.”
The fun-filled event will take the bay waters on November 17. During the Thanksgiving season, the act of leadership will leave a lasting impact on the Best Buddies students, giving everyone something to be thankful for.
Gifts of Giving
As the final bells of the semester ring, the holiday season is in full chime. The acts of giving back by Plant students continue to have a ripple effect throughout the community. Whether through service, song, or sportsmanship, all programs show that giving back is at the heart of what they stand for. The season may come and go, but the spirit of compassion and connection through unity will last far beyond the winter months.
