Semi-Finals
The Plant volleyball team competed in a challenging game against Osecola for the state semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 6. Plant came in with a positive, confident attitude, ready to take on the battle that Oseceola brought.
Oseceola’s student section was loud and hype, causing a slight distraction for Plant, but the players were determined and kept the fight. Finals
Following their advancement to the finals, the Panthers prepared to head back to Polk State College on Saturday for what they anticipated would be the toughest match of the season. Their opponents, the Winter Park Wildcats, were no strangers. Over the past three years, Plant and Winter Park have faced off for the state championship title, with Plant winning in 2023 and Winter Park in 2024.
Plant showcased impressive momentum right from the start of the opening set, powered by strong digs from Horvick, a Duke commit, and notable hits and aces from Godsey. This early surge helped the Panthers take a 2-0 lead. Bucey, committed to Coastal Carolina, contributed with a dig and an ace to keep the team’s power. A kill from Godsey evened the score at 10-10, and Mitchell, a softball commit to JMU, delivered a standout kill that was featured in the cover photo. Mosbaccher then finished off the set with back-to-back kills, taking the score 25-23. Ultimately, Winter Park won the set 27-25, but the game didn’t stop there.
In the second set, the teams played competitively. Plant worked their way up to a 10-2 lead. However, while still keeping the score ahead of Winter Park, Winter Park increased the pressure, evening out the score a bit. Mitchell made a block, taking the score 22- 19, and Mosbaccher made a kill, finishing the set with a Panther lead of 25-22.
Players emphasized the importance of maintaining composure throughout the match. “I feel like moments like timeouts and in between points were crucial for the team’s performance,” Kaia O’Malley (9) said. O’Malley added, “We played the best we had ever played in the first two sets, so I am proud of that—especially against a team that thought we were terrible.”
Although the first two sets went well, in the third and fourth, they were neck and neck with Winter Park, resulting in frustration within the team. The Panthers lost their momentum, ultimately leading to their defeat. The final score was three sets won by Winter Park and one set won by Plant
The loss brought Plant’s overall record to 19-9, while Winter Park’s victory extended their season record to 31-1. Olivia Nalley (9) reflected on the team’s growth, saying, “I think moving forward we will remember how far we made it this season being the underdog and know that we can really do anything as a team depending on how bad we want it.”
