There is no doubt that students experience both positive and negative aspects of their school days. From the moment the alarm clock goes off to the minute the final bell rings, students have a range of feelings about their school experiences. When asked, most students will tell you about the best parts of the day, when they see their friends, and the worst parts of the day, when they are stressed, tired or have too much to do. As students from various grade levels were interviewed, it was evident that the majority of the “best” experiences students have are associated with friendship and having the opportunity to be free. On the other hand, the “worst” experiences for students revolve around stress, tiredness and packed schedules.
For many students, spending time with their friends is the most exciting part of their school day. They enjoy hanging out together before class, laughing in the hallways and eating lunch together every day. It is those small social exchanges that create an atmosphere of enjoyment for them.
Lunch ranks second in excitement for many students. Although the food quality does not always meet the highest standards, students appreciate the break from classes. “You never feel rushed or worried about your grades when you’re eating lunch,” said sophomore August Voss. “It’s nice to just sit and talk without anything else to think about.” That brief break from homework and the opportunity to chat with friends without worrying about it have made a huge difference for many students.
Finally, when students’ elective classes are included, students rank this type of class high on their list of favorites. Art, band, journalism and theater are examples of electives that students view as a welcome relief from their other classes. “My journalism class is by far the best part of my school day,” said junior Hailey Claudillo. “It doesn’t feel like school; it’s something I look forward to.” Those classes allow students to be creative and feel in charge of their own education.
On the other hand, the school day is not always fun for students. One of the main grievances students expressed was the early start time of school. Many students felt that beginning school so early makes it difficult for them to remain focused, particularly during the first class. “First class is the hardest; I’m still half asleep,” said freshman Alex Brun.
Many students also expressed that the large number of tasks and responsibilities they are required to manage is another major drawback of school. Between homework, tests, practices and extracurricular activities, it can be overwhelming. “As soon as you complete one task, there are three others waiting,” said junior Grace Fasulo. “The stress builds up very quickly.” With constant stress, students often feel drained rather than motivated.
Although students have identified several negative aspects of school, they generally agree that the positive aspects of their school experience outweigh the negative ones. Friendship, engaging classes and supportive teachers are all contributing factors to making school more manageable.
In conclusion, the “good,” “bad” and “ugly” aspects of the school day illustrate what students value most: relationships, balance and a break from the pressures of school. Even though the school schedule is demanding, many students have certain classes throughout the day that make it worthwhile.
