“Project Hail Mary” hit theaters March 20, 2026, bringing a new space adventure to the big screen starring Ryan Gosling. The film is based on the novel by Andy Weir, the New York Times best-selling author of “The Martian,” and follows a high-stakes mission to save Earth.
Set largely in space, the story centers on Ryland Grace, a scientist who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As his memories slowly return, he realizes he has been sent on a desperate mission to stop a mysterious threat that could destroy life on Earth. Along the way, Grace encounters an unexpected form of alien life, leading to an unlikely partnership that becomes central to the story. The film blends science, suspense and emotion, drawing audiences into both the mystery and the human stakes behind the mission.
My Opinion
I feel as though out of all the movies I’ve seen that are based in space, nothing will ever top “Interstellar,” but “Project Hail Mary” is a close second. I really had no idea where the movie could take me, but as I was watching it in theaters, it put me into an incredible, almost trance-like state of awe and admiration.
The movie immediately draws you in with Gosling’s character, Grace, waking up in space with no idea or recollection of who or where he is. That alone makes you want to keep watching, because you’re just as confused as he is. As the story unfolds, he gradually begins to understand his purpose and the importance of his mission to save Earth.
When he later comes across life in the universe, specifically Rocky the alien, the movie takes an even more emotional turn. They create a truly special connection that becomes the heart of the film. Their relationship was incredibly moving, similar to the movie “E.T.,” as they both develop a deep sense of trust, care and understanding for one another.
Grace and Rocky repeatedly risk their own lives to save each other, and that was honestly the most powerful part of the movie. It shows that even across completely different worlds and species, connection and sacrifice still matter. That’s something that really stayed with me, and it’s something I won’t forget anytime soon.
Goslings’ acting continues to amaze audiences with his wide range of abilities to pull off any kind of character whether it’s being in love, robbing a bank or on a life altering mission in space.
Wrap-Up
Overall, “Project Hail Mary” delivers more than just a typical space movie. It combines suspense, emotion and an unexpected friendship to create a story that feels both exciting and meaningful. While it may not replace classics like “Interstellar,” it definitely stands out as one of the most memorable space films in recent years and leaves a lasting impression on anyone who watches it.
