Teenagers all around high school and middle school are constantly surrounded by distractions and things to do. We are consistently engulfed in music and content throughout, with students walking around school in AirPods or in headphones, not bothering to think about what they are doing, and are consistently distracted by the music or content they have in their ears.
Walk around any school currently, and you will see that a large majority of the students have some form of earphones on them, and as this generation is entering adulthood, we see this more and more inside of public spaces like airports, businesses and offices. This causes more distraction to the younger generation with an inability to do less than 2 things at once.
Teens are losing attention spans with both social media and the amount of overstimulation they face. According to the American Psychological Association (APA): With the average human attention span has gone down from 15 seconds to 4 seconds in the past 3 years. The average human attention span has dropped to that of a goldfish.
Headphonesty says, “Studies show that headphone and earbud use isolates us as a people, reducing approachability as, when someone is in headphones, they are seen as to be minding their own business. This leads to a heightening increase of loneliness in Gen Z, with studies showing that 38% of headphone wearers feel lonely more than 1 time a day.”
Considering over 68% of Gen Z own headphones and wear them on a daily basis, it’s no surprise that we see more and more loneliness and individualism than ever before.
According to Psychology Today, “Headphones and music eliminate boredom, while that may sound good in theory, boredom is in reality important for our thoughts to collect and be able to create. Nowadays, people are losing creativity and true thoughtfulness due to being constantly surrounded by dopamine, without a way to collect our thoughts and with the current prevalence of AI and social media, we will lose our ability to truly have critical thinking about things.”
There are, however, positives as they may help focus on things and help people be able to completely submerge themselves in the work they are doing, reducing distractions in the moment.
“I really love music and AirPods just help me get focused, it helps me get through time quicker,” says Tommy Mena (10). “Especially if I need to write an essay or get through a class quicker, it helps me.”
