The girls’ offense contributed to their success throughout the game. With big plays, the girls were able to maintain their advantage on the board. Seniors Melina Torres and Ally Martin both contributed a touchdown to their teammates’ efforts and helped support the rest of the team’s effort offensively.
“I think we all trusted each other and stayed calm,” said Martin. “I don’t know if you can say anything about it until we get that first score…But I think once we got that first touchdown, it seemed like everything else began falling into place.”
Plant’s defense contributed significantly, with Martin and Sophia Ventura (11) combining for five sacks. The defensive line applied consistent pressure, keeping Steinbrenner from making long plays and forcing short drives.
“We knew we needed to be aggressive with the pressure,” Ventura said. “Our coaches wanted us to try and get to the quarterback so we could stop Steinbrenner from making plays down the field.”
Another key moment in the game came when Sophia Harrison (12) scored the third touchdown, helping extend Plant’s lead. Harrison was thrown a pass by quarterback Reese Pittman (11), who has been playing for the Panthers since her freshman year. This is Pittman’s second year as the quarterback for the varsity girls’ team.
“All of our players stepped up today,” said junior Emma Sullivan. “We all did our part because we all want to advance past the playoffs this year.” Sullivan has also been with the Panthers flag football team for three years and contributes to the team’s success.
Plant’s strong defense consistently kept it ahead on the scoreboard. Although the offense scored touchdowns and contributed heavily to the final score, the majority of the successful plays were due to sacks and flag pulls on the defensive side.
Combining the scoring and defensive pressure, the girls demonstrated their effort throughout the season. The 19–6 result reflected their ability to build a margin over Steinbrenner.
The flag football program at Plant is directed by Coach Baity and focuses on organization and preparation. Practicing focuses on the fundamentals of the sport and on working together cohesively. All aspects of gameplay are taken care of by the coaches. Along with Baity, there are various assistant coaches: Coach Sullivan, Khorn, Sheikhet and Pittman.
With the victory, Plant advances in the playoffs with an 11-3 record heading into the next game. The Panthers face Alonso on Thursday, April 23, with the winner advancing to the next stage, which would be regionals. Both teams are expected to fight hard to advance.
Plant, coming off a game marked by multiple scoring drives and steady defensive action, will enter the next matchup ready to replicate that performance against Alonso. For Steinbrenner, this loss marks the end of their season.
