Why John Scott should be an NHL All-Star

If you have kept up with the world of the NHL recently, you would’ve seen the news about Phoenix Coyotes player John Scott receiving the nod as captain of one of the All-Star teams. Being an all-star is no joke, but many view that this happens to be one. Scott only has 5 career NHL goals, and hasn’t done much this season.

But with campaigns by a few hockey podcasts, “Puck Daddy”, and “Reddit”, Scott was selected via fan votes to represent the Pacific Division. This resulted in a lot of controversy both with him and the NHL, but he will nonetheless be a captain. The situation has been compared to Rory Fitzpatrick’s All Star campaign in 2007, in which fans vote for a player who would not end up an All-Star.

But with the flaws in the NHL voting system, Scott still deserves to be an All-Star. With the establishment in this voting system, Gary Bettman should have known that there was a way to break the system, and the Scott controversy is what uncovered it.

But in this day and age, the fans deserve a vote, and a say in who gets the nod. And even if they want a sub-mediocre player with Scott to be a captain along with Florida Panther Jaromir Jagr, who’s to say they can’t? And even with all of the well-deserved players that should’ve gotten the nod over Scott, in the end it should go to Scott, as this is a lesson learned for fans, players, and executives within the NHL.
