Champions League starts off right

Champions League starts off right

Today marked day one of the UEFA Champions League tournament, and it met everyone’s expectations for excitement.

The UEFA Champions League is a world renowned soccer tournament played by only European teams. There are eight groups of teams, each with four teams in them. The top two teams advance after each team has played every team in their group twice, once at home, and once away.

The most notable game was between FC Barcelona and Celtic FC. Barcelona edged out Celtic by a score of seven to zero, a score line not seen very often in soccer. Barcelona is seen as favorites to win their group, and maybe even the Champions League this year.

Bayern Munich also won their opening game, outscoring Rostov, a Russian team, five to zero. Bayern Munich showed their dominance, and gave all soccer fans insight into what the rest of their season will look like.

Arsenal FC played Paris Saint Germain, a game that ended in a two to two draw, but provided insight on the intense play expected to come from both teams throughout the year.

FC Basel played Ludogorets Razgrad, two of the weakest teams in the tournament. FC Basel did show what they are capable of, as they dominated the game, but were very unlucky to not be able to get the win from this game, which is very important for their survival in the Champions League, as they have a tough group to get out of.

Benfica played Besiktas, another one of the weaker games of the day. The game ended one to one, both sides being relatively equal.

Napoli beat FC Dynamo Kyiv by a score of two to one, but it was a slow paced game.

Atletico Madrid played PSV Eindhoven, in which Atletico Madrid won one to zero. It was a game they deserved to win, and that they needed.

Manchester City was supposed to play Borrusia M’gladbach, but weather caused a postponement of the game.

Overall, the first day of Champions League soccer was a very entertaining one to witness, and it shows how entertaining the world of soccer will be this year.
