Passing the ball, senior captain Ansley Melendi looks for an open teammate Jan. 15 at Dad’s Stadium. It was the annual senior night game where the teammates said goodbye to their senior teammates.

The girls soccer team defeated Strawberry Crest High School 6-0 at home Jan. 15. They also celebrated senior night for the graduating players.

“We were really excited since it was senior night,” sophomore Quinn Ryan said. “We just wanted our seniors to play good and get the goals, so we were working with them.”

The girls immediately took control of the scoreboard with a goal from senior Shannon Snyder off a through ball from senior Ansley Melendi. Snyder beat the keeper and sunk the ball in the back of the net for the first goal of the night. Then junior Courtney Cavanaugh earned a second goal for the team with a shot from the top of the box.

“We played as a team and played together,” Melendi said. “We were trying to get all the seniors to score, and there was a focus on that which was good. We played well.”

Still in the first half, senior Elise Kern threw the ball down the line to Melendi who continued down the right side of the box to beat a defender and make the score 3-0. Soon after senior Mia Bush cleared the ball from defense to eventually make its way to Snyder’s feet for her second goal of the game.

“My favorite part of senior night was probably halftime and the speeches and what we did after,” Snyder said. “We had a get-together with everyone.”

During halftime after the Danceros performed, the team recognized the graduating players with a special senior night ceremony. Bush, Kern, Snyder and Melendi were escorted by their parents and received flowers as well as speeches.

“I liked when we went out with the parents and then we got a book with notes from everyone on the team,” Melendi said. “It was nice.”

In the second half, Ryan and junior Alyssa Crocker also added points to the scoreboard, making the final score 6-0.

“Shannon had a good shot, and the keeper saved it,” Ryan said. “The ball was laying there, and all the defenders were away, so I ran up and shot it.”

The win contributed to their 12-1-1 record. The team faces Newsome High School next Jan. 18.

“We did good and were all confident that we were going to win,” Ryan said.
