Student Bound for Filmmaking

Domonique Stockon, junior, worked hard to achieve her dream of being a filmmaker. From putting together football highlights, to creating short films, this girl has possesses many skills in the world of film.

Domonique Stockon:

  1. What made you have an interest in filming?

A: My 8th grade year, somebody asked me to help them with a video and I taught myself IMovie, FinalCut, and all the editing programs. My mom’s a photographer and I’ve been taking photographs my whole life and film came next.

  1. Are there any movies and filmmakers that inspired you?

A: One of the major ones are Steven Spielberg, because his movies are incredible. Pretty much all of my favorite movies are Steven Spielberg, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, and all of those. I do love Wizard of Oz and that is probably my favorite movie ever. But Steven Spielberg definitely.

  1. Is there a genre of film you like to film? Why?

A: I like to write realistic stories. Like realistic fiction and mystery. Those are probably the main two and I like mystery a lot.

  1. Do you do anything to promote yourself in filming? What do you do to catch the people’s attention?

A: I go to a few film festivals and a lot of the ones I chose didn’t have a high school showcase and I didn’t get in because I was going up against colleges and professionals. But, I’ve done a bunch of college programs out in Los Angeles. And doing that really helps because you make connections with people who actually work in Los Angeles.

  1. Is being a filmmaker in the future your dream?

A: It is. Normally if you ask me what part of film I want to go into I still don’t know that. I’m looking at directing because there’s not a lot of female directors. But, I really enjoy producing and I do highlight videos for Plant’s football team and I’m thinking of going into doing something with ESPN; my mom’s friends with the executive producer of Survivor and so I may end up going to work for them after I graduate.

  1. Is there a way people can look at your videos?

A: I have my youtube channel and I haven’t put a lot on there recently. Just the highlight videos and other than that not really. I’m thinking of starting a Vimeo probably soon because that’s kind of more designed for films.
